DIY Hygge Kit or Gift Basket

My sister’s birthday is in September. What better time of year to start hygging? So I picked up a few small comfort items and built a wooden box to put them in.

What is Hygge?

According to Wikipedia

Hygge (/ˈhjuːɡə/ HEW-gə or /ˈhuːɡə/ HOO-gə) is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. As a cultural category with its sets of associated practices hygge has more or less the same meanings in Danish and Norwegian, but the notion is more central in Denmark than Norway.[1] The emphasis on hygge as a part of Danish culture is a recent phenomenon, dating to the late 20th century.

Hygge is fireplaces, warm blankets, wood grain, family, friends, quiet, peace, flickering candles, comfort, laughter, reading a book, watching a rain storm.

The Contents of the Kit I Made

Better Homes & Gardens Velvet Plush Oversized Throw

I got this at Walmart for less than $10. My aim was to find a super cozy blanket – this one is very soft – that also matches my sister’s style. I thought she would like this one, and the price was far less than I was hoping to pay.

Moonlight Candle by Scentsational

I found this at TJ Maxx for $2.99. I was there with my parents – they were shopping for her birthday presents too – so I had them smell a couple of the candles with me. In a democratic fashion, we determined which one she would like best. This was the one.

Hygge and Lagom Book Bundle by Maya Thoresen

This double-feature Danish Hygge and Swedish Lagom book was only $5 on Amazon. There were still a few more Hygge items I wanted to add to the kit, so finding such a great deal on this hygge book made was a nice blessing.

Red Refresh and Organic Chamomile Teas

Warm drinks are a great way to hygge. I got the Trader Joe’s Red Refresh tea at…you guessed it, Trader Joe’s. I found the Lifestyle Awareness Organic Chamomile at TJ Maxx. Each of them costed about $3.

Frank Lloyd Wright Fallingwater Double Sided Puzzle

Yet another uber-hygge item, puzzles. When I was browsing Amazon, I was trying to find a puzzle that would fit my sister’s personality. I came across this beautiful puzzle for $15. That’s not bad for such a nice puzzle. I absolutely had to get it because my sister is studying architecture in college. Plus, Fallingwater is awesome.

Happy Fall-ama! Mug

This is another TJ Maxx find. I paid less than $5 for this beauty. My sister had a short phase in high school during which her nickname was Llama. I have no idea why. I guess it was some inside joke between her and her friends. Anyway, it seemed like a good fit for her, and a great fit for a hygge kit.

Today Will Be T-Riffic T-Rex Mug

I found this one on Amazon. My sister loves the Jurassic Park movies – so much so that she has more than one of them in her top 10 (if I remember correctly). The mug was on the expensive side, $15, but I bought it before I found the Happy Fall-ama! mug. That’s okay though. The Happy Fall-ama! mug won’t be quite as useful when it’s not fall anymore.

Wooden Box I Made From Scraps

IMG_0632

I looked for a suitable gift bag or basket at Walmart, but I couldn’t find anything that really made sense. My dad has a table saw and some scrap wood, so I decided I would make her a box instead. It’s not great. One of the boards is a little warped, and a couple of the nails bent when I was hammering them in, but I think the wood grain and the hand made feel really make this box perfect for my sister’s hygge kit.

This box certainly doesn’t have every small item that would be great in a hygge kit. Other items I would suggest are scarves, hats, thick socks, hand made trinkets, works of art (paintings, sculptures, etc), and adult coloring books.

What would you add to your hygge kit?
